Relaunch Having little to do as photo-journalist these days, I decided to relaunch Lightroom Magazine, which was originally published online in 2006. As I was very busy towards the end
of last year, it was difficult to
find the time to edit the magazine. However, now I have decided to
devote more time to it's upkeep and it will be updated on a monthly
basis, so please bookmark this site and check back regularly if you
find the articles interesting.
Agency profilesPlease note the magazine is not yet complete, though it should all be linked up properly in a few day's time. So please check back next week and apologies for some dead links which are marked (not yet uploaded). This month, we look at some great reportage agencies. Hollandse Hoogte HH is a well-known Dutch reportage agency which handles the latest news, sports and more in-depth magazine features. They represent many noteable agencies in the Dutch-language market. Tightly edited and full of interesting documentary images, whether photographer or editor, it is certainly worth a visit. http://www.hollandse-hoogte.nl Royal Geographical Society Picture Library While it is a modest collection online (some 90,000 images), the British RGS photo library is a positive treasure trove of exploration imagery from some of the lesser-known and remoter parts of the world. The archive dates back to the dawn of photography and is a good archive for those who have great material from far-flung, off the beaten track places. Editor Justin Hobson says he is always looking for photographers with interesting collections. http://images.rgs.org/ Magnum Photos Some would describe Magnum's archive as culturally iconic, rather than historical, though in fact it is both and more, holding some of the best photo-journalism from all over the world dating back to the 1930s. Again, just as fascinating for photography lovers, as it is for picture buyers. Getting into Magnum is difficult and best attempted when you are quite an experienced photo-journalist. http://www.magnumphotos.com Rex Features Rex is a well-established London-based press agency which handles anything from sports to photo essays. An extraordinary archive of news and features from around the world. This agency is preferred by some press photographers, due to it's huge syndication network. http://www.rexfeatures.co.uk Panos Pictures Panos is a unique archive of development and social issues. They also have a lot of war photos from the past few decades and have an eclectic collection ranging from AIDS posters in Uganda to China's emerging economy. A mainstay for many researchers, Panos is a good bet for those who shoot a lot of development issues or work on commission for INGOs. Half of the agency's cut goes to the Panos Institute which helps poor communities across the world. They are also increasingly well-known for their features and photo essays, so are a good bet for some photographers and editors alike. http://www.panos.co.uk |
